DAR ES SALAAM – Four tourist hotels were destroyed by fire in Tanzania’s Zanzibar, the police said on Saturday.

“Fortunately, no one, including tourists, was injured by the inferno,” said Suleiman Hassan, commander of the South Unguja Regional Police. “Three of the four tourist hotels were razed to the ground,” said Hassan at a press conference, adding that the fire broke out in the Villa De Coco Hotel on Saturday at 5 p.m. local time.

High winds caused the inferno to spread to three other hotels, all owned by foreigners, Hassan said.

He did not disclose the nationalities of the foreigners. “Tourists staying in the fateful hotels were able to get to safety and were taken to other hotels,” said Hassan.

The firefighters managed to put out the fire, he said, adding that police and other security agencies are investigating the cause of the fire.
