Frank Reich trained Ertz for the past two years, and the Colts could certainly use another viable weapon – even if they rely heavily on the running game.
Indianapolis re-signed TY Hilton and has 2020 second rounders Michael Pittmann Jr. with a promising end to his rookie season, but the Colts were unable to hold onto the injury-prone ex-second-rounder Paris Campbell on the field. Close end to the ninth year year Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox combined for only 645 yards last season. The wentz trade, assuming it stays healthy for most of this season, will cost Indianapolis a first-round selection in 2022. Bringing in its former top target at low cost would add convenience to the relocated QB and justify the high investment.
Jacksonville Jaguars
This spot differs from the others mentioned here as the Jaguars have a season of 1-15 and are in clear rebuild mode. But Jacksonville drafted Trevor Lawrence and has no demonstrably tight end to connect to. The Jaguars also lead the NFL in the cap area ($ 38 million).
Since the draft weekend, Urban Meyer has expressed concern about his team’s narrow depth chart. The Jags designed them Luke Farrell in round 5 and continued to sign Tim Tebow. While this would apparently not be a desirable location for Ertz as a free agent, the Jags could make sense as an unorthodox trading destination.
