WASHINGTON (WDVM) – As more people across the country get the COVID-19 vaccination and states begin lifting restrictions, many are booking summer vacation.

AAA describes a new trend as a “revenge trip” for those who couldn’t take a vacation in the past year.

“Because many consumers have extra resources because they couldn’t travel last year and want to make up for lost time,” said AAA vice president of Leisure Travel Chip Morgan.

AAA said many travelers are planning extended vacations and are most likely heading to a warm and welcoming destination.

“Sun and fun destinations are really where people book for this summer. As consumers continue to have more confidence in travel, people visit Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii and all popular destinations, ”said Micki Dudas, AAA director of leisure travel sales.

If you are planning on renting a car during your summer trips, AAA recommends securing a car early through a rental agency or using an alternative service.

“During the pandemic, many car rental companies sold their inventory. Lower availability and increased demand have driven prices very high in the world of car rental, ”said Debra Calvert, General Manager of AAA, Merchandise & Auto Travel.

Although the latest data From airports in the DC area, the number of travelers is still declining compared to early 2020. Travel officials will soon be more optimistic about normalcy.
