Parents are twice as likely to have traveled since the pandemic started and they are planning to travel in early 2021.

“Pandemic travel planning is not going to go away, and so our research is really focused on understanding what positive behaviors we can take away from this moment to rebuild travel now and prepare for what is next in the future.” “Says Katie Junod, General Manager at Travelocity.

The travel brand’s 2021 Pandemic Travel Planning Survey examined past, present, and future planning tactics that could help Americans prepare for travel in the coming year. Three surprising topics emerged from the report.

Do you have any questions about pandemic trips? Ask a parent

Travelocity predicts that family travel will be the first type of travel to make a comeback in 2021, in large part because parents have traveled twice as often as non-parents since the pandemic began, and they indicate greater familiarity with change in the travel industry.

“Parents are arguably some of the hardest hit by the pandemic as they are under pressure to coordinate everything and everyone at home,” says Junod. “As a result, travel is more of a necessity for them and they are kept informed of any changes.”

According to the survey, parents also tend to take trips earlier, plan earlier and book their trips earlier than non-parents.

Restore travel confidence with a “toe dive” trip

After nearly a year of travel restrictions and quarantines, 60% of travelers say they are planning a post-pandemic trip within the next 9 months and many (43%) feel extremely or very confident about their plans. According to Junod, this is largely due to travelers planning shorter trips that restore confidence and create a sense of normalcy in the short term.

“We may dream of this big bucket-list trip, but what travelers are actually planning this year are visits to well-known destinations (24%), a road trip or beach trip (30%, or a weekend getaway (26%)). ”

Prioritize personal safety as you make travel plans now and later

“As travelers plan trips now and later, their priorities change – and what makes them feel confident and secure,” says Junod.

The respondents said the most important influence on their travel decision was the cleanliness of the hotels, the transport options and the safe accommodation in their travel destination (81% in each case as “extremely” or “very” important). Travelocity introduced improved cleanliness filters for hotel and car searches last summer and introduced cleaning and safety indicators for air travel before the holiday trip. Online travel agencies have also updated the safety warnings for travelers with information from the CDC and made it easier to change or cancel travel plans by offering hotels with free cancellation options and flexible flight options like no change fees2.

“As vaccination and testing programs continue to expand, we know travelers need information about how this affects travel and we are working to make sure they get it.”
