The Tasmanian government welcomes today’s announcement by the Australian government that it will continue to support our tourism industry.

The package includes half price airfare for visitors to Launceston, Devonport and Burnie bringing visitors to Tasmania and giving a boost to the local tourism businesses that have made it tough with COVID-19.

It will bring more travelers willing to spend money in our hotels and cafes, which means more jobs and investment for the tourism and aviation sectors and more money for local businesses and our economy.

While Hobart remains a major draw for travelers, we have worked for many years to encourage more travelers to explore all areas of our state and to further spread the economic benefits. Therefore, this package will build on this important work.

Today’s announcement complements what we have done in support of the industry with an estimated additional $ 27.5 million spend expected to be generated through our Make Yourself At Home travel voucher program.

Fortunately, the latest data from the National Visitor Survey for November show that this is having an impact, as the number of domestic overnight trips increased by 95 percent compared to the same month last year.

The number of domestic overnight stays also increased a whopping 90 percent, and domestic overnight traveler spending was $ 99.9 million, up 58 percent from the previous year.

While there is no doubt that the industry continues to be affected by the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, today is another positive move that will help the industry continue to recover.
