Addu City Council said the Interior Ministry had not resolved any of the problems that the Addu Police Station was facing.

The council said it had been a month since it informed the ministry that the police station was lacking money.

After a knife stab in Addu Hithadhoo on September 17th, Addu City Council held an emergency meeting at which the Ministry of Interior was informed of the deficiencies of Addu police on August 4th.

The Home Office replied on August 22nd. According to Addu City Council, they said they would solve the problem.

The Deputy Mayor of Addu Ibrahim Shuahu had told Mihaaru News that they had not received any updates from the ministry since then.

“It is difficult to serve the public with the limited vehicles and officials we have, especially given the rise in crime,” he said.

Addu has a population of over 34,000. Shuau said they met senior officials from the Maldives Police Service on several occasions and discussed the difficulties the Addu Police have in dealing with the city’s growing social problems.

The Ministry of the Interior has not yet commented on this issue.
