SAN DIEGO – As Omicron’s COVID-19 variant spreads, local air traffic is expected to still approach pre-pandemic levels this Christmas season.

The San Diego County’s regional airport authority said that approximately one million travelers are expected to pass through San Diego International Airport from Friday through January 3.

A spokesman for the local road safety agency said morning is the busiest time of the day.

“You will just find a constant flow of people filling up like before the pandemic,” Lorie Dankers told FOX 5.

She wants to remind vacationers to plan and reserve parking in advance if possible. She also said travelers should arrive early and mask themselves.

To save time, TSA asks everyone to pack smart. This includes keeping all guns and liquids over 3.4 ounces out of your carry-on bag, including holiday favorites like frosting and pudding.

“Keep that in mind if it’s a liquid that can be spilled, dispersed, pumped, or poured,” said Dankers.

The TSA also urges travelers to provide items in their pocket if needed.

“We are asking people not to wrap their presents because if there is any further verification, our officer will have to unwrap this present and it will look like the Grinch,” she said.

Dankers said the TSA’s staff in San Diego is currently down by about 20 officials, but this has no impact on the trip as the TSA is pulling resources from national staff as needed to make sure things go smoothly.

The airport authority said the construction of Terminal 1 will not delay the waiting time during the holidays. Parking spaces after January 3rd are particularly affected.
