The Mayor of Cozumel said efforts to restart the island’s economy and tourism have so far been successful thanks to an increase in airline arrivals and the return of cruises.

According to the Riviera Maya News, Cozumel’s Mayor Pedro Joaquin Delbouis announced that Cozumel International Airport will have 98 scheduled flights for the coming week, 80 of them from the United States.

Airlines connecting US cities to the popular Mexican tourism hotspot include American (Miami, Dallas, and Charlotte), Frontier (Chicago and Denver), Southwest (Houston), Sun Country (Dallas), and United (Houston, Denver) , Los Angeles and Chicago).

Cozumel’s director of urban tourism, Pedro Hermosillo Lopez, announced that nearly 180,000 tourists flew into Cozumel in May.

The Cruise industry also returned to the island when Royal Caribbean’s Adventures of the Seas arrived on June 16, the first ship to dock in Cozumel port in 15 months. Mayor Joaquin Delbouis also announced that 24 more cruise ships are expected to arrive by the end of July.

Earlier this month MSC cruises announced that MSC Meraviglia and MSC Divina would visit Cozumel this year. Norwegian Cruise Line also announced plans to head for the Mexican island when shipping resumes.
