The impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on the global tourism industry has been devastating. However, many countries remain confident that this is one of the industries that will play a role in the economic recovery, and some South American nations like Argentina are targeting the Chinese market.

Joel Richards has this report.

In one of the most popular tourist areas in Buenos Aires, agencies like this one have now been closed for a year.

The tourism sector hopes that more of these visitors will come from China. The government recently announced an agreement with the Trip.com group to promote Argentina in China.

Argentina’s tourism minister says industry provides 10 percent of the country’s GDP and believes the Chinese market has room for growth.

However, the key question remains when international tourists can visit.

The Argentine health authorities have identified a number of other variants of the coronavirus in circulation. Although the number of daily confirmed cases remains relatively stable, the government has tightened restrictions on newcomers.

The Argentine tourism industry is hoping the country can overcome the expected surge in the coming weeks to give the sector a boost later this year.
