BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Are you looking for a job? What about in the hotel or catering industry? Birmingham companies are desperate for work.

A job fair was held in the Boutwell Auditorium on Tuesday. The city of Birmingham, in conjunction with a few dozen restaurants, hotels and motels, hoped to make it easier for people to apply for a job. Many companies have been forced to lay off employees over the past year as they have been closed or drastically reduced due to COVID. Many workers were able to find other jobs, so companies sought workers to get back on their feet to meet growing customer demand.

To attract more workers to the workplace, companies offer better pay, and experience is not a prime commodity.

“We sometimes had to stop selling rooms in our hotels because we didn’t have the staff to serve them. It’s the worst when you’re in. We are grateful to be busy but not able to operate it. Employees can only do so much to understand and respect their quality of life. Sometimes we literally have to close our stores because we don’t have enough staff to serve our guests, ”said Steve Miller of the Birmingham Sheraton / Westin.

Miller said they would train you if you were inexperienced. He said they want people to be trained for a variety of jobs. The Sheraton / Westin Hotel is looking for housekeeping, drivers, and restaurant staff. An open-minded, positive attitude helps. The hotel requires unvaccinated workers to wear masks. Everyone has their temperature checked before work. If you are interested, Check out their available jobs here.
