The Chicago-born comedian and actress Erica Watson dies of the consequences of the coronavirus. She was 48 years old.

February 28

The Ohio Department of Health reports that the number of confirmed or probable infections rose to 967,422, up from 1,268 since Saturday. There are also 60 reported deaths for a total of 17,297. Ohio Investigative Unit agents report quotes for inappropriate behavioral disorders being posted in bars in northeast Ohio over the weekend: Waterbury Coach House, Lakewood; Harvest Parlor, Strongsville; Rookies Sports Bar & Grill, Parma Heights; Heaven Mediterranean, Parma Heights; and Colebrook Lounge, Orwell. Cases are being tried by the Ohio Liquor Control Commission for possible penalties, fines, and suspension or revocation of alcohol permits.

1st March

The number of new cases in Ohio increased by 1,452 to a total of 968,874 during the pandemic. The total number of deaths for the state stands at 17,346. … The Cleveland Clinic is the second healthcare system in northeast Ohio to announce a clinic to help patients with persistent Covid symptoms that have persisted after the first sign of infection. The reCOVer Clinic connects patients with symptoms that last longer than four weeks with specialists from 18 health areas and other resources. … The federal government allocated 448,390 doses of vaccine to Ohio this week, a record, says Governor Mike DeWine. The allocation includes 96,100 doses of the newly licensed Johnson & Johnson, a single dose shot, as well as first doses from Pfizer and Moderna. … Statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the US has reported at least 2,463 cases of coronavirus variants that were first discovered in the UK, South Africa and Brazil.

2nd March

Ohio adds 1,709 cases on Tuesday for a total of 970,583 cases. … A new counting protocol announced by the Ohio Department of Health drops today’s death toll from 17,346 to 16,750. … Ohio sports venues and entertainment centers may reopen at reduced capacity and a 300 person limit for banquet centers will be lifted if other health rules are followed. under new orders issued by the administration of DeWine. … US Senator Rob Portman (photo above left) shows that he was one of the first people in Ohio to receive the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson as a participant in a clinical trial. He urges his Ohioans to get the vaccine he believes is “safe and effective”. Portman says he doesn’t know if he got the actual vaccine or the placebo in November. (He was later told he had received the vaccine.) More than 39,000 people in the United States, South America, Mexico, and South Africa participated in the study.

3 March

Another 2,022 coronavirus cases are reported in Ohio, bringing the total to 972,605. … Cleveland has 40 new cases and two deaths. … The bags of high new case rates have plummeted in Ohio. In Greater Cleveland, only five zip codes show more than 100 new cases in the past two weeks. For comparison: in mid-January, around half of the postcodes in the seven-district region had 100 or more new cases in two weeks. Reports of infections less than two weeks old at the time topped 200 cases in 28 zip codes, with a high of 473 in the Painesville area. The current high is in the mentor’s zip code of 44060, where 127 cases of symptom emergence have been reported in the past 14 days. … Vaccinated Ohioans are free to visit New York without observing the state’s strict travel restrictions. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (pictured above right) announces that vaccinated Americans will no longer have to follow the state’s complicated quarantine and testing rules put in place to contain the spread of the virus. … Some Catholic bishops are discouraging Church members from receiving the latest single vaccine from Johnson & Johnson when alternatives are available. This is because the bishops have “moral concerns” over the use of laboratory-grown cells obtained from cells from the tissues of aborted fetuses in the 1980s. … USA Today reports that major retailers including Kroger, Macy’s, Starbucks, Target, and Best Buy are not resetting their mask mandates as some states are resetting mask mandates.

4th of March

DeWine says if Ohio drops to 50 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people for two weeks, all health contracts will be eliminated. … The state reports 1,875 cases, bringing the total in Ohio to 974,480. … Ohio reports an increase of 1,156 cases in K-12 students and 477 in staff at the cheaper Level 2 orange for the week of February 22nd, and one is yellow at the lowest level. It’s the sharpest improvement in months on the state’s Covid Alert card. (All of Northeast Ohio remains on high alert.) … The University of Akron will hold four personal opening ceremonies May 7-9, with a ceremony for 2020 graduates who missed the start due to the pandemic. The conclusion will take place at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field.

5. March

A coronavirus mass vaccination center is slated to open at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center on Wednesday, March 17, and will be able to vaccinate 6,000 people a day. DeWine is holding a press conference at the center in downtown Cleveland to discuss details of the center, which is supported by the Biden Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
