The highest-stakes Newark Academy, # 1 in NJ.com’s top 20, defeated runner-up and # 6 Millburn 5-0 in the final of the Essex County tournament on Saturday afternoon at Branch Brook Park.
The Minutemen defeated Livingston 5-0 in the morning’s semi-finals, while the Millers beat third-placed and Montclair No. 14 5-0.
It is the third consecutive ECT crown for the Newark Academy.
The Newark Academy, which is 10-0 in the season, lost a total of only seven games in the final. In the first individual, Nicolas Kotzen defeated Matias Feoli 6: 1, 6: 1.Sam Goidel also defeated Aarush Gupta in the second individual 6: 1, 6: 0 and Josh Mandelbaum scored 6: 0, 6: 0 in the third individual. Victory over Will Boo.
In the first double, the duo of Ethan Poland and Andrew Zabelo won 6: 2, 6: 1 against Eric Jones Seth and the tandem of Andrew Kotzen and Saif Prabhu achieved a 6: 0, 6: 1 triumph against Aryn Juneja and Liam Pilarski the second doubles.
The final round was Zabelo’s first game of the season. Zabelo, who played in the second single in 2019 for the second year, injured his wrist in the preseason. He’s working his way back. His presence only makes the Minutemen so much stronger.
Newark Academy and Millburn will meet again in Livingston on May 25th.
