AVERY COUNTY, NC – Summer tourism season is almost here and several campsites in Avery County are open.

Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive outside of the state in the next few weeks. The Avery County Health Department is hoping to vaccinate as many people as possible.

“I feel good about all the tourists who are preparing to come into town because you just never know,” said resident Rose Reed.

Within an hour of setting up a mobile command trailer Thursday morning, Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty saw two dozen people lining up for vaccinations.

“My job, everyone is vaccinated so they don’t wear a mask, and I want to be as safe as possible with everyone who travels here,” said student Mandi Barry.

Some people said they hadn’t received the vaccine yet because they were having trouble finding a place to offer it. They didn’t originally plan to get it, or they were supposed to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine before distribution was temporarily suspended in April.

Free transportation to the mobile clinic is provided for people who live in Avery County.
