Ralf Rangnick explains tactical change at half time after Brighton win

Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream return to Manchester United could be cut short after just one season – with several clubs ready to pounce on his potential exit from Old Trafford.

The Portugal star sealed a surprise move back to the Red Devils last summer as United looked to get back in the Premier League’s winner circle once again after their runner-up finish last term.

The aim for Ronaldo was to help the club challenge for silverware with a possibility he would eventually retire in Manchester.

That’s not quite gone according to plan as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was relieved of his duties due to United’s struggles, while his successor Ralf Rangnick hasn’t drastically improved the situation either.

It’s not a foregone conclusion that United will finish in the top four and if they don’t, it’s reported Ronaldo wants to look for a new club.

And as expected, teams are circling the 37-year-old if that does materialize.

The Sun claims Paris Saint-Germain, Roma and Bayern Munich are three clubs that have expressed an interest so far.

Here are five potential landing spots for Ronaldo and how he would fit in with each of them.

PSG

The prospect of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi playing beside each other before their careers come to a close would be a fairytale ending for two of the greatest players to ever play the game.

But there are major question marks over whether they could co-exist together.

This season at PSG is a prime example of why having three superstars in the same team is not as easy as it seems as they struggled to get the best out of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Messi.

Mbappe is likely to leave in the summer but the same issues would persist if Ronaldo is brought in as his replacement.

That doesn’t mean the French club wouldn’t go for it, however.

PSG will be thinking of the financial and marketing benefits of having two of the greats in one team – something that has never been done before.

Bayern Munich

If Ronaldo is looking to go deep in the Champions League, win league titles, while trying out a new league – Bayern Munich would be a suitable destination.

The Germans have dominated the Bundesliga in recent years and aren’t showing any signs of slowing up.

Bayern have star power in abundance with Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller with a string of young talent such as Alphonso Davies who will ensure they’ll be competitive in the years to come.

There are no two ways about it, that will appeal to Ronaldo.

It’s a move that would benefit Bayern too as they’re looking for that player to get them back to the Champions League summit.

Roma

It’s not a surprise to see Roma are interested in Ronaldo, but it would be a shock to see him entertain a switch to the Stadio Olimpico.

the Jose Mourinho factor gives the Italians a glimmer of a chance after his successful relationship with Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

But that wouldn’t be enough to convince him to join the Serie A side.

Roma are struggling under Mourinho, currently lying in seventh place, and there is no reason to believe they will become a Champions League side in the near future – which is a bare minimum for Ronaldo.

Sporting Lisbon

Ronaldo’s boyhood club will always be in the mix when his future is up in the air.

The former juventus man made it clear he would like to end his career where it all started after coming through the ranks with Sporting Lisbon.

But Ronaldo isn’t at that stage yet, he still thinks he can operate at a high level for another few years so, on that basis, the Portuguese side are a long shot.

They can’t be ruled out, however, as Ronaldo’s return to Lisbon seems a matter of when not if.

Man United

It’s not a given Ronaldo will leave Man United in the summer as a lot can change from now until then.

If Ralf Rangnick’s men seal a top-four finish and sign an exciting new manager who brings in a few key signings for next season, it’s a different story.

United are not in need of a drastic overhaul and if the club can prove to Ronaldo they are going in the right direction, he will buy into that given his warm affection for the club.

Ronaldo struggled to adapt to Rangnick’s style of play but he could easily flourish under someone like Mauricio Pochettino.
