A new cruise ship that will be operational over the next year will have a retractable SkyDome over the main pool area. The SkyDome will debut on P&O Cruises’ next new ship, the Arvia.

The SkyDome retractable roof glass, a first for P&O Cruises, was developed to maximize the amount of time in the sun that the cruise ship will visit, starting with a Caribbean maiden season next winter. Every aspect of Arvia has been designed to bring guests even closer to the sea, sky and coast, reflecting its name, which means ‘from the coast’.

Arvia’s SkyDome will be a relaxed poolside setting during the day, with nighttime entertainment including live music, spectacular production shows, DJ sets and outdoor blockbuster movies on SeaScreen. The shipping company has released the following video, which gives us a first look at the retractable SkyDome.

The SkyDome retractable roof from Arvia, measuring 40.96 mx 34.24 m, was designed by Martin Francis with engineering from the award-winning British company Eckersley O’Callaghan.

This renowned engineering firm has worked on projects ranging from the Bulgari Glass House in Italy to Apple Park in California and its Steve Jobs Theater; the largest structure in the world that is only supported by glass.

The SkyDome was created on Iona, which was launched in May 2021, with Arvia presenting the first version of the SkyDome from P&O Cruises with a retractable roof.
