Peter Gutwein, Premier

Guy Barnett, Secretary of Commerce

The Tasmanian government will lead a tourism and trade mission to New Zealand later this year as part of our plan to expand and diversify our opportunities around the world.

Prime Minister Peter Gutwein said that following Air New Zealand’s new direct flights between Tasmania and Auckland, we will be traveling across the Tasman at the end of September to showcase all that our state has to offer.

“The mission will identify new growth opportunities between New Zealand and Tasmania in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, defense, food, agribusiness, Antarctica and the energy and carbon sectors – and of course our great tourism offering,” said the premier.

“This not only opens up exciting new opportunities for Tasmanian exporters on the New Zealand market, but also gives them access to other international trade routes, the Auckland as a hub for international connections to the west coast of the USA, East Asia and the South Pacific.

“I expect this mission will be well supported, with early indications that more than 20 tourism and hospitality businesses will be participating in this first five-day, opportunity-oriented mission.

“I will also take the opportunity to request a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and other senior ministers to further develop the strong ties between our countries.

“I will be accompanied by Secretary of Commerce Guy Barnett, and we will also be traveling to Wellington to promote key defense and maritime services trade opportunities.”

Trade Secretary Guy Barnett said the Tasmanian government committed to developing and implementing an integrated trade strategy with New Zealand during the recent state elections.

“The world wants what Tasmania has, and a more diverse trade and tourism strategy means more jobs and more opportunities for our state,” said Minister Barnett.

“As part of our first 100-day commitment, we are working on our integrated trade strategy and the New Zealand Mission will help further develop it.”

The Tasmanian government is securing the future of the state through a diversified trade strategy that secures more jobs and more opportunities by helping our exporters get their products and services out into the world.
