RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Thousands of visitors flock to the Black Hills every year. Participate in a wide range of outdoor activities.

The weather is still being decided, but soon it will be warm and people will make their way to the mountains.

However, according to Doctor Shankar Kurra, the vice president of medical affairs at Monument Health, they are also likely to bring COVID-19 along with new variants.

Kurra is concerned that visitors are creating so-called reservoirs, or places where the disease lives and lingers until tourists leave, and then spreads to more people who are not vaccinated.

He was particularly concerned about children who are currently unable to receive the vaccine.

Kurra says if eighty percent of residents are vaccinated, the disease is unlikely to spread in waves as it bounces from one person to another.

He asks people to look after themselves and their neighbors so that we can all enjoy a prosperous tourism season.

“When you have eighty percent [vaccinated], The [remaining] 20 percent is well protected with these tourists coming and going and you won’t have waves. So it really is up to us in the West River population to think about it. Protect our children, protect yourself, “says Kurra,” and you will really enjoy the summer and the tourists when they come here. “

Kurra looks forward to people coming and discovering the Black Hills and recognizes the importance of the tourism industry to South Dakota. He looks forward to this being done in a safe way for everyone.
