Dear Colleagues:

The Syracuse University public health team continues to monitor pandemic conditions and current and new public health guidelines. As we continue to see improvements in key public health indicators, the university will evaluate the status of current restrictions and lift or amend them as appropriate. In line with the latest guidelines, we have started easing restrictions on business travel.

Effective immediately, Syracuse University will reduce faculty and staff travel restrictions on deemed material business trips, which are defined as academic or business trips that have been approved as material by your dean or senior vice president and achieve the desired goals that are otherwise not achieved can be reached without the requested trip.

Before booking a business trip, we ask you to complete the following three steps:

  1. Authorization received: Please speak to your immediate supervisor or department head to ensure that the planned trip meets the definition of an essential trip. The supervisor or head of department will then seek approval directly from their dean or senior vice president on behalf of the traveler.
  2. Submit your study trip application: After completing step 1, please submit your Application for a university trip for lecturers and staff. The applications are reported to the deans and senior vice presidents at regular intervals for their records. If you have not yet complied with the university’s vaccination requirements, you can do so via Questionnaire for COVID-19 vaccination certificate for faculty and staff.
  3. Fill out the travel register: After you have submitted your study trip application, please fill out the form required University of Syracuse Travel Records to submit the details of your travel plans.

Please note, Trips that include one or more students cannot be requested under this procedure. Instructions for trips that include students should be discussed directly with Seth Tucker, Director, Global Safety and Support at satucker@syr.eduthat can provide information about the process. Approval for research trips must be obtained from the Office of the Vice President for Research. For information on this procedure, see the Research office website.

With best regards,

Andrew R. Gordon
