EVANSVILLE, INDIANA (WEHT) – The Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau announced new study results that CEO Jim Wood said will play a role in this upcoming ten-year plan called the Tourism Master Plan.

“We’re really excited to roll up our sleeves and do some of this work,” said Wood.

It is a proposed plan that encourages development in many different fields, including amateur sports. Wood said they want to expand the deaconess sports complex and soccer field.

“Add four to five additional baseball fields for baseball ages thirteen and older. We can add a field house to the complex that could be anywhere from 175 to 180,000 square feet. This can accommodate all yard sports and all indoor mat sports. Then add an additional sports training facility for people who live here or in the region, ”said Wood.

With hospitality development also taken into account for the region. Wood said that wasn’t all. The proposed plan allows for different growth on the riverside and downtown.

“How do we build our inner city? We have identified areas of need. We need more residents and apartments in the city center. How can we reclaim a little more of this waterfront by expanding it? We’re offering more options for local people who come from out of town to enjoy the waterfront, ”said Wood.

Ideas for further outdoor adventures, festivals and congresses are also included in this plan. Wood said things were just beginning. The Visit Evansville Board of Directors will meet again to discuss how to bring all of this to life and what money is needed to do so.

“How can we make these things happen? That’s the next step. We have ten years to make some of these elements a reality and we hope we can do most of them so we can continue to grow our region to make it one of the best places to live in the country, ”said Wood.
