SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – Before the snow starts, high winds are already causing problems for South Dakota drivers.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol released a photo of a truck and trailer tipping over due to high wind speeds. The authorities urge drivers to exercise caution and check the latest forecast for the trip.

The KELOLAND Storm Center reported that the peak winds in the west and center of KELOLAND were very strong in the west and center. In the past 12 hours a strong gust of wind of 150 km / h was reported in Buffalo. Expect 70-80 mph gusts of wind in Rapid City.

Most of the Interstate 29 corridor will be under a snow storm warning starting Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

The American Automobile Association recommends taking various precautions during winter.

Before you go out on the street –

  1. Accelerate and slow down slowly
  2. Increase your next distance
  3. Don’t go up hills
  4. Don’t stop if you can avoid it

  1. Stay with your vehicle
  2. Be visible: Tie a colored cloth to the antenna of your vehicle or place a cloth on top of a rolled up window to signal an emergency. Leave the dome lights on at night if possible
  3. Cleaning the exhaust pipe: Make sure that the exhaust pipe is not clogged with snow, ice or mud.
  4. Save fuel
