FORT MYERS BEACH

With Memorial Day weekend in full swing, hotels and restaurants across Lee County seem to be thriving again.

Despite the pandemic, a large number of tourists have recently been pumping more money into our local economy. Most, if not all of the hotels on Fort Myers Beach are booked up.

The restaurants looked forward to the busy weekend too, especially after the success they had last year.

Brian Hamman, Lee County commissioner, said the number of people coming to Southwest Florida has been increasing steadily.

Hamman said things were starting to look even better than they were before the pandemic.

“This is going to be big for us. We usually have a very seasonal economy in our region where we do very well in winter. There is a decline in summer and early autumn. Then things will look better again when we go into the next season. We believe there will be no season this year. We think this year will be pretty busy all year round, ”he said.

Hamman said they expect things to go smoothly all weekend, but more sheriff MPs will be there to make sure.
