AUSTIN — The Riverland Community College men’s basketball team dominated Ridgewater in a Minnesota College Athletic Conference victory on Saturday, winning 84-69.

Savier McCall and Jayden Hill led the way for the Blue Devils. McCall had 17 points and nine rebounds. Hill made four 3-pointers, good for 16 points.

Riverland (12-8) outscored Ridgewater 49-28 in the first half.

Ridgewater sophomore guard Malik Westerfield scored a season-best 28 points. He shot 12 of 20 from the field, making four of five free throws.

The Warriors play Minnesota State Community and Technical College at 7:30 pm Wednesday in Fergus Falls.

Riverland’s Cayli Miles led with 24 points and Savannah Longhoma had 20 in the victory at Austin.

The Warriors had two scorers reach double digits. Mallery Geistfeld notched 17 points and Gabby Randt had 10.

Ridgewater heavyweight Austin Schlangen had a first-place finish at the North County Open Sunday at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.

Competing in the Silver 285-pound tournament, Schlangen clinched the title with an 8-6 decision over St. Cloud State’s Jadon Mims. Serpents is a freshman from Eden Valley-Watkins.

Cole Holien also had a strong showing for the Warriors. The freshman from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City was second in the Silver 141 bracket. In the championship, he lost a 16-13 decision to Concordia-Moorhead’s Sam Kulseth.

Other area wrestlers at the meet included:

  • Willmar’s Jonas Anez was the runner-up in the Silver 165 bracket. A freshman at Minnesota State-Moorhead, Anez went 2-1. He lost the championship in a 6-3 decision to St. Cloud State’s Owen Herbst.
  • Willmar’s Mason Swanson took third in the Silver 285 bracket. He is a freshman at Concordia-Moorhead. He beat Ridgewater’s Charlie Farhat, a fellow WHS grad, in the third-place match by a 7-2 decision.
