TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – When children drop out of the care system, they can face housing and work challenges.

To address the problem, Lucas Metropolitan Housing plans to buy the historic Park Hotel and turn it into a home for foster children once they come of age.

Most of the children are unwilling to be alone, and some are homeless.

20-year-old Alyana Parker said she was scared when she left care. and it was abrupt.

“The first month was very difficult to be alone. I was just scared of being alone and not having anyone to hold my hand at this point. “

The redeveloped Park Hotel would have 43 one-bedroom apartments and provide them with the mental health, education and professional training services they need.

“All units will have rental support,” said Matthew Sutter of Lucas Metropolitan Housing. “The voucher pays their rent so they don’t become homeless again while they work to stabilize their lives in other ways.”
