Frances Tiafoe started off his Japanese Open campaign with a win over Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-3 6-4 to keep on winning.
It all started at the US Open for Tiafoe who got to the semifinal of that event unlocking a new level in his game. He followed that up with some amazing tennis at the Laver Cup getting Team World a couple of big points. He then continued that here in Tokyo.
It was nothing spectacular from Tiafoe but it was a comfortable win for the American against the native player. A good chance to get to know the conditions and how the court behaves and he did just that. One break in each set was all he needed got it done.
He was superb in the opening set hitting 5 aces and dropping only 5 points in total on his serve. He did not exert too much energy on return opting for a measured approach and it worked. The second was far more competitive as his opponent found a better rhythm and actually forced him to save some break points.
He saved both with ease to go to round two of the event.
