As a space everyone needs to visit, regardless of their social standing (or sitting position), bathrooms can be one of the best ways to add character to a project. When we’re at our weakest, bathrooms are quiet, secluded arenas that offer a few minutes of rest in an otherwise hectic environment. This is how the originality of the user experience can really stand out.

Whether relaxation in hospitality, individuality in living or drama and culture in public spaces – bathrooms can surprise and inspire the user and at the same time come to rest. Here are eight projects where a designer bathroom is an integral part of the interior design.

The boutique hotel Mondrian fits in perfectly with the unforgettable hospitality of the Middle East, combining Laufen Palomba and Run pro toilets and sink with large, made-to-measure bathtubs. Each piece has a sculptural quality to match the rest of the hotel with its ophidian spiral staircase and interior light canopies inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Following the maxim that less is more, the hotel uses 25 hours Kartell by Laufen washbasin bowls without a base, with an exposed metal tube with a great effect that brings light and minimalism into its binary spaces.

The rooms are divided into the darker interior of the building and the light-flooded outdoor area. Both have an open bathroom concept with light fixtures, but the inner rooms present a livelier, more futuristic interior, while the outer rooms offer a retro affair, with showers overlooking a window over the city.

Relaxation and tranquility are the overarching themes of the Asian-inspired Seerose wellness retreat, which is 40 km outside Zurich on the shores of Lake Hallwil. Generous bathroom suites with fruit wood paneling and KWC fittings bring the tasteful, refined character of the spa directly into the private areas of the resort.

Deliberate exaggerations and surprises are the basis of the Laurichhof Hotel’s furnishing concept. By using Tece flush plates and shower channels in the bathrooms, the design team Annette Katrin Seidel and Franz Philip Seidel managed to visibly astonish stainless steel bathroom surfaces as well as the ceiling and wall motifs in other areas of the hotel, such as the zebra-patterned dining room ceiling or the ceiling in the spa.

The housing shortage in the UK means many iconic buildings are being converted into living spaces. The more famous the building, the higher the demand for its zip code. This combination of an old building with contemporary uses is mentioned in the refurbishment of the historic BBC Television Center as high-end living space by Suzy Hoodless, an interior designer of the show home. Hoodless combined contemporary geometric Val washbasins from Running, alongside contemporary geometric tiles, together in a fashionably traditional two-tone color theme and style.

With the Philharmonie and Chamber Music Hall, the Elbphilharmonie is the epicenter for social and cultural entertainment in Hamburg. The striking facade of the building made of curved glass windows offers an unmistakable view of the city while washing your hands in the Palomba washbasins for toilets by Laufen.

In the form of a rotating zoetrope, the Royal Arena in Copenhagen is a culturally symbolic image of the entertainment itself. However, visitors entertained by international music artists, music productions and sporting events cannot rest in the public toilets in front of the drama of the stage. Theatrical Vila urinals, along with others Running sanitary ware, combine and contrast with the death black tiled interiors of the toilets to create a character that is worthy of the stage.
