San Antonio can a long way ago before the tourism industry recovers from the COVID-19 downturn. But reconstruction now has someone at the helm.

Marc Anderson, a veteran tourism marketing executive based in Chicago, will serve as President and CEO of Visit San Antonio, the nonprofit that leads tourism advancement for the city of Alamo.

He replaces Casandra Matej, who has left earlier this year Director of Tourism Marketing for Orlando, Florida.

She left when the pandemic deeply affected the San Antonio tourism and convention sectors. The city at the end of last year began to make loan payments for the 1,000-room Grand Hyatt Convention Center Hotel after the company was no longer able to meet them with room income.

“I am very excited to join the Visit San Antonio team and this vibrant community that is poised not only for incredible recovery but also for extensive growth in the years to come,” said Anderson, who previously served as chief operating officer for six years Officer for Choose Chicago and McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America.

Anderson’s experience also includes serving as the Regional Marketing Director for The Peninsula Hotels overseeing all business development in the Midwest and Canada.

“Marc joins an already stellar team in San Antonio and has the skills and expertise to help us navigate the COVID recovery period and make a lasting impact on our region,” he said Jeffrey Arndt, Chairman of the Board at Visit San Antonio and CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit.
