In a year when tourism numbers were low due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Niagara-on-the-Lake winery still found its way to the forefront of tourism and hospitality.

Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery received the Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Award during the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce’s 17th Annual Niagara Business Achievement Awards on March 24th.

Paul Harber, whose family runs the winery, said the award was a nice surprise and they were really honored.

“It’s nice to be recognized by your colleagues and your community,” he said.

It wasn’t the only award the Harber family won that evening. Abatement Technologies, a construction equipment supplier in Fort Erie whose CEO is Harber’s brother Andrew, won the Excellence in Manufacturing Award.

“We are proud of him and all of his accomplishments and also of my father (Blair) for what they achieved at Fort Erie,” said Paul.

For the Ravine award, Harber said more growth is to come.

“I still think we’re one of the new kids on the block, even though we’ve been operating since 2008. We have a lot more plans to make Ravine stronger, not bigger. ”

He said their mission is to bring home a true Niagara experience for tourists and corporate groups hosting corporate retreats or executive meetings.

Ravine – originally a small delicatessen bakery and a winery – has expanded its restaurant offering over the years both lunch and dinner and built a dining room for guests to enjoy their meals and wine. Most recently, the winery built an event facility for weddings and conferences.

“It’s certainly a passion, a love for the industry and the community, and it drives us not to do more every day, but to get better every day,” said Harber.

He also recognized the other companies nominated in their category and the rest of the Niagara business community.

“It is really an exciting place to run a business and I wish everyone continued success, especially in these times,” said Harber. “I look forward to welcoming more people to our property and seeing other people on other properties.”
