AUSTIN, TX – Governor Greg Abbott has issued a proclamation Recognized May 2-8 as a travel and tourism week in Texas. This week highlights the critical impact the travel and tourism industry is having on the state of Texas and celebrates the resilience and ingenuity of the Texans serving in the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the proclamation, also Governor Abbott posted a video Celebrate travel and tourism week.

“In Texas, we know that it is not our challenges that define us, but how we overcome them. The men and women of our travel and tourism industries have the future firmly in view by embarking on a path to recovery.” reads the governor’s proclamation. “At this point, I and my Texans are realizing the power of travel to fuel economic recovery in Texas, and I am celebrating the contributions of the travel and tourism industry in the Lone Star State. I encourage everyone, Texans and non-Texans, alike Visit TravelTexas.com and learn about the limitless possibilities awaiting those ready to embark on their next adventure. “

Prior to the pandemic, one in ten Texan jobs was created by travel, and the travel industry was responsible for the $ 169.8 billion economic impact on the Texan economy. Texas has already started seeing a recovery in travel due to hotel bookings during and since the spring break.

The governor’s office for economic development and tourism (Travel Texas) is responsible for promoting Texas as a premier travel destination. The office works with its partners (convention and visitor bureaus, local chambers of commerce, private travel-related organizations and associations) to promote travel to Texas in both national and international tourism marketing.
