After locals requested the restoration of the 16 sun temples in the Somnath area, a team from Gujarat Tourism visited Somnath to find out about the ancient sun temples in the area. According to sacred texts, these temples were scientifically built in ancient times to mark the 16 aspects of the sun’s rays. Ahmedabad Mirror reported on June 9th about the citizens’ request for the restoration of the ancient sun temples in Somnath.
According to Somnath Nagarpalika President Piyush Fofandi, “It is encouraging to know that the PMO has expressed an interest in the restoration of the ancient Sun Temple.” According to Fofandi, today’s Somnath region was’ Skand Puran ‘in the ancient religious scriptures as’ Prabhas khand ‘known. This Prabhas area comprised the region from Somnath to Madhavpur, Prachi and Vanthali on different sides. According to the scriptures, prabhas is at a specific meridian point on earth with respect to the sun. The city of Somnath is currently also known as “Prabhas Patan” among the locals.
Vijaysinh Chavda, General Manager of Somnath Trust, confirmed that a team from Gujarat Tourism had visited Somnath to learn about the ancient sun temples in Somnath. According to Vishal, a team member from Gujarat Tourism, they have completed the two-day visit to Somnath to tour the Sun Temples. The results of their visit would be disclosed in the official statement from the authorities.
Chavda said, “There were 11 sun temples in Prabhas areas to mark 11 different aspects of the sun’s rays. However, these temples were destroyed hundreds of years ago by the Mughals and Mohammed Gaznavi. Nobody restored it. In fact, we don’t even know the exact location of these temples at the moment. There is currently a sun temple in good condition opposite the Triveni Sangam. The temple is open for darshan and tourists visit the place. About 5 temples are in a broken condition. “
