Hawaiian Airlines will launch a new five-minute video on its in-flight entertainment system highlighting safety at sea and hiking, protecting the environment and endangered species, and best cultural and community practices.

the “Travel Pono” spot provides expert advice from five Hawaiian Airlines crew members, including a firefighter, a cultural worker and volunteers on search and rescue and marine mammal protection. It will air on transpacific flights starting next week.

“We have been the hometown of Hawaii for over nine decades, and as residents of this special place, we pride ourselves on welcoming our guests with valuable information that will enrich their island experience while helping to protect the natural resources of Hawaii and our species Life, “said Avi Mannis, senior vice president of marketing for Hawaiian Airlines, in a press release. “Over the past month we’ve heard from our community and staff asking for a video like this, and we’ve listened.”

A pilot who volunteers for Ke Kai Ola asks people to leave no litter behind and to maintain a respectful distance from marine animals including Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles and dolphins, as well as avoid walking on coral reefs and use reef-friendly sunscreen .

A flight attendant, who is also a firefighter, reminds visitors to watch out for currents, avoid dangerous land breaks and watch the tides, and keep an eye on children at the seaside.

Another flight attendant advises visitors to take the time to read educational signs in parks and understand, “many of these sites have deep cultural significance to indigenous Hawaiians.” When visiting these pages, visitors should stay in designated areas and know that “kapu” means that they will not be entered.

The in-flight spot is an extension of the Hawaiian Travel Pono program the airline launched last fall to promote responsible tourism when the state once again welcomed visitors with its Safe Travels program. Tips on how to experience Hawaii safely and respectfully were also shared on Hawaiian’s email, website, blog, and social media prior to the trip.

In April 2019, Hawaiian partnered with the State Department of Land and Natural Resources to send public education releases focusing on managing the islands’ natural resources, and this month added videos posted by the Hawaii Tourism Authority for their popular Malama Hawaii campaign were created.

“We all have a shared responsibility to malama (looking after our guests) and in return we ask them to look after us and our homes,” said John De Fries, President and CEO of HTA. “We thank Hawaiian Airlines for taking a leadership role in educating visitors about how to respect and promote our people and our place for the well-being of our communities across the state.”

Before landing, the spot will run on the in-flight entertainment system of the Hawaiian wide-body Airbus A330 and via wireless streaming for personal devices on the narrow-body Airbus A321neo.
