As Tom Cruise turned 60 over the weekend, a UK tabloid report delivered some bad news, saying that the handsome, charismatic and seemingly ageless actor had been “dumped” for a second time by his “Mission: Impossible” co-star, Hayley Atwell

The Sun also reported that Atwell, 40, has already moved on with a new boyfriend, having broken up with Cruise after being seen at the London premiere in May for his blockbuster new film, “Top Gun: Maverick.”

It’s hard to know how seriously to take the news that Cruise was involved in a serious, long-term relationship with the British-American actor, which The Sun said began in 2020. The Sun said the romance was first called off last September, then resurrected before the “Top Gun” premiere. “Things had cooled off but they’re now back in touch quite a lot and appear to be growing closer again,” a source told The Sun in May.

The Sun reported Friday that the relationship has been called off again, and it said that Atwell has begun dating music producer Ned Wolfgang Kelly. Nonetheless, another source insisted to The Sun that “Tom and Hayley’s relationship was genuine.”

Maybe that’s true, or maybe Cruise and Atwell were just colleagues, and all the romance talk could have even been for PR. The thing is, the world may never know because the mega-star has become a notoriously secret about his personal life. The true nature of Cruise has always been “elusive,” as New York Times critic Calum Marsh wrote on Sunday.

When it comes to his romantic life, Cruise stopped being publicly attached to any woman after his 2012 divorce from third wife Katie Holmes. Before Holmes, Cruise openly dated and married a string of well-known Hollywood actors, including his “Risky Business” co-star Rebecca De Mornay, first wife Mimi Rogers, second wife Nicole Kidman and his “Vanilla Sky” co-star Penelope Cruz .

But it’s become widely accepted in Hollywood that Cruise over-exposed his private life and started to do damage to his tightly controlled career and public image when he jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s couch in 2005 to proclaim his love for Holmes. The “Dawson’s Creek” actor was 26 when they began dating, some 16 years Cruise’s junior.

At the same time, Cruise’s adherence to the controversial Church of Scientology also became a topic of intrigue in the 2000s, with news reports portraying him as one of the most powerful people in the organization. Multiple reports also have said that Scientology was a factor in Cruise and Holmes’ marriage and in Holmes’ decision to file for divorce in 2012, because she was concerned about the church having an outsized influence over how they raised their daughter, Suri.

When asked about the divorce, Cruise opened up just a little on a German talk show, saying he was blindsided: “I did not expect that. To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you — this is it, what life can do to you. Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor.”

Many in the film industry would say Cruise is having the last laugh now with the arrival of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The sequel to Cruise’s popular 1986 saga about dogfighting Navy pilots has soared to more than $1.2 billion in worldwide box office, proving that audiences still want to go see movies in theaters, or at least, that they want to go see Tom Cruise movies in theaters .

“Top Gun” also has earned critical raves for being one of the most entertaining and finely crafted action films in years, with Cruise earning some of the most glowing praise of his career for turning in a performance that’s nuanced, charming and defines why he’s America’s biggest movie star.

If Atwell in fact has “dumped” Cruise, then she’s leaving him when he’s riding high on a wave of global good will, so maybe he’s not hurting too much. It’s also easy to imagine that Atwell and Cruise have remained on good terms, whatever the status they enjoyed in private. While Atwell didn’t walk the red carpet with Cruise at the “Top Gun” premiere because he was focused on welcoming Prince William and Kate Middleton, insiders have told The Sun that she was at the event “purely to support him.”

Meanwhile, Atwell and Cruise will continue to be seen together on the red carpet and at other public events when “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” premieres in July 2023. This film, the seventh in Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” series , will be followed by the release in June 2024 of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two.”
