Sauk Prairie’s Sam Koenig prepares a throw at first base during a Northern Section game against Wisconsin Dells in 2019. Koenig and Connor Leister combined for 14 strikeouts and enabled an undeserved run on four hits in the Twins’ season opener 5-1 Win Plain on Sunday.

Reedsburg Pirates’ Durrell Naquin celebrates after hitting the base during a Home Talent League Northern Section game in 2019. Naquin and the Pirates had a difficult start to their season when they scored just one goal in a 7-0 loss to Ashton on Saturday.

After finishing second in 2019, the Sauk Prairie Twins showed that they are still one of the best teams in the Home Talent League this year.

Sam Koenig and Connor Leister together scored 14 hits, allowing only four hits and an inexperienced run when the twins rolled past Plain 5-1 at a season opener in the Northern Section at Sauk City Jaycee Baseball Park.

“Sam and Connor led us in this win. They are as solid pitchers as you will see in Home Talent,” said Lucas Koenig, Sauk Prairie player and manager.

The twins remained without residue and took a 1-0 lead with an Elliot Dederich sacrificial fly. Dederich knocked in the fifth on an RBI single another for a 2-0 lead before the twins opened in sixth place.

Sauk Prairie pushed through three more runs, including a Dylan Slotty doubles, to take a 5-0 lead. Plain ended up in the top of eighth place with an undeserved run, but it was far too little too late.

Slotty went up and down the plate with a pair of RBIs 3-4 while Tyler Prime also doubled up for Sauk Prairie, who took advantage of three plain mistakes.

“Dylan had a great day for us and I know we look forward to hitting the ball harder in the future,” said Lucas Koenig.
