SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Almost a year ago, COVID canceled the NAIA women’s national basketball championship tournament in Sioux City.

With the tournament returning next week, new Sioux City hotels are ready to welcome coaches, athletes and fans.

The Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Sioux City opened last summer in the middle of the pandemic. Its general manager, Matthew Robinson, said business had been going well despite the events and travel restricted by COVID-19.

Robinson is excited to fill hotel rooms with COVID-19 security.

“We have 150 rooms and we plan to sell them all. Not only is it great business for our hotel, of course the revenue is important and we want to make as much money as possible, but it’s also great business for our business partners here Historic Fourth Street, “said Robinson.

The Warrior Hotel in downtown Sioux City also opened in summer 2020.

Lila Plambeck, director of sales and marketing, said The Warrior was grateful for the opportunity to host the tournament in town.

“Well, it will obviously be our first time doing NAIA at the Warrior Hotel. The NAIA board members and everyone in the community all know how to do it. We’ve done this before and we applaud the NAIA. We are, I am.” excited to have her here and we’re just so glad that can happen this year, “said Plambeck.

Plambeck said there will be two players per room instead of four due to COVID.
