Chicago-Chicago is gaining tourist attraction again after the absence of the pandemic.

This weekend, McCormick Place welcomes 8,000 girls and their families to the Nike Tournament of Champions, the venue’s first major event since the pandemic. As a result, locals are seeing more tourists in the city center, and restaurants and hotels are preparing.

“The number of registered teams this year is about the same as in 2019,” said Kara Bachman of the Chicago Sports Commission. “Of course, it tells us that the demand is still there. The parents feel safe and comfortable to bring their little daughters, families and siblings to our city. “

50 seats and 672 teams give locals a glimpse into the tourism resurgence in the Chicago area. Places like the Sheraton Hotel attend major events to make up for lost time.

“We still have a long way to go, but that’s a great step,” said Mark Lauer. “The auto show in a few weeks is the next big step.”

Last weekend was a good indicator of Chicago’s ability to take up post-pandemic tourism.

Last Saturday, the weekend of July 4th, the occupancy rate in the city center reached 69.4%. This is close to the mid 80% mark that hotels have traditionally seen over the past few years.

“I didn’t hesitate. The demand is great, ”said Lauer. “Once again, wherever we are, it’s a question that comes up every weekend. [are] “Where’s Navy Pier?” Where is Millennium Park located? “” Where is the Magnificent Mile? ”

The next major tournament designed to boost hotels and restaurants in the Chicago area is the auto show a few weeks later. More than 120 events are planned for McCormick Place over the next year and a half.

The representatives assume that they will return to normal levels by next summer.
