CHENNAI: Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir is pushing for direct flights from Chennai to Srinagar to encourage the arrival of tourists.
The union area is also trying to encourage residents to travel to Tamil Nadu to enjoy the summer in the south.
The union territory government has asked the union government to approve flights as TN is a growing market for tourism.
“We need more flights from Chennai. We have taken up the problem,” said Waseem Raja, additional secretary for tourism, J&K government, who was in town for a road show.
He also said that TN is the fourth or fifth source market after Gujarat, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Around seven lakh tourists visited J & K in January.
“This time we’re promoting lesser-known destinations along with popular ones.
Gurez, Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, Bhadarwah, Basholi, Bani and a few others are lesser known places that are advertised. ”
J&K is also working hard to encourage return traffic from Srinagar to Chennai so that people can head to Chennai to enjoy the summer.
“We suggested it to the travel agents here yesterday. TN and J&K are sister states,” added Raja.
The roadshow in the city was organized in collaboration with the Travel Agents Society of Kashmir (TASK), in which around 160 travel agencies and tour operators took part.
It was part of a campaign in 21 locations across the country.
