Strict boundary rules to continue

On January 11, the Japanese government announced that the strict border restrictions that prevent most foreigners from entering Japan will last until at least the end of February.

All travelers from the United States must adhere to a mandatory three or six day quarantine in facilities designated by the Japanese government. The duration of the quarantine varies depending on where the travelers come from. Rules regarding quarantine requirements change frequently and without notice. Travelers should monitor local news sources, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Justice Department, and Department of Health, Labor and Social Welfare websites before departure.

Travelers who test positive for COVID-19 must comply with government regulations regarding the required quarantine time and pre-release testing. The US embassy cannot intervene in these matters.

Extended processing times at airports

Due to increased screening measures related to Omicron’s COVID-19 variant and the increased number of travelers being quarantined in hotels designated by the government of Japan, travelers may experience longer waiting times on arrival.

Grocery store and vending machine options are limited during the customs, immigration, and quarantine processes. Travelers may want to bring importable, non-perishable groceries in their hand luggage. In addition, travelers should travel with sufficient medication and baby / toddler requirements in anticipation of longer waiting times at the airport.

Diet restrictions in quarantine hotels

Food will be provided in hotels designated by the government of Japan. However, special requests due to dietary restrictions cannot be considered. Travelers with dietary restrictions may want to bring non-perishable foods. While some hotels allow delivery from grocery stores, food delivery services, and / or shipping carriers, policies may differ depending on your location.

Family accommodation in quarantine hotels

Government-provided hotel rooms are often not big enough for some families. Please note that for this type of family group, you can be accommodated in separate rooms, including the children. Each traveller’s luggage should be packed separately and contain all items necessary for quarantine. The rules for accessing other rooms may differ depending on the location.
