STA, April 24, 2021 – The Juliana Trail, a 270-kilometer hiking trail that circles the highest peak in Slovenia, Mount Triglav, was named the best tourism project in Europe by the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW).

The trail is operated by the Julian Alpine Community, whose coordinator Klemen Langus said he was glad that the project had also received recognition for its sustainable orientation and clear philosophy.

The trail was started in 2018 to reduce the load on Triglav visitors. The 16-step trail mostly goes through villages and visitors are encouraged to use public transport to get there.

The Juliana Trail offers some of the best views and hiking in Slovenia

Quoted in a press release from Tourism Bohinj, Langus said the award was also a responsibility to “truly honor the commitment we made at the start of the trail and the criteria it follows”.

“The path leads through unknown corners and should influence many elements of local development in the Julian Alps: the negative demographics, the development of agriculture and public transport. It should guide visitors and thus protect the environment,” said Langus.

The trail, nominated by BGTW member Rudolf Abraham, was one of the six finalists in the race for the BGTW International Tourism Awards in the Best Europe Tourism Project category, together with another Slovenian project, the Secret Rooms of Hotel Jama, Postojna. The winners were announced at an online event on April 18th.

Juliana Trail is a prime example of a tourism product that has a positive impact on both the local population and the environment. Tourism Bohinj’s publication quoted BGTW chairman Simon Willmore.
