Jungle Cruise, like Black Widow, is also a rental – but Dwayne Johnson’s film exceeded box office expectations by more than 40 percent.

The National Association of Theater Owners attributed Black Widow’s disappointing performance to its same-day availability of $ 29.99 for Disney + customers. Of course, home platforms are taking away some of the revenue from the cinemas. Enough to blame it for the sub-par opening weekends and the steep dips that often follow? Increasing evidence shows that this is not the case.

The estimated $ 200 million “Jungle cruise“Opened to $ 34.2 million domestically, an impressively strong result when tracking points to $ 25 million, and one studio reported $ 30 million in premium VOD revenue through Disney + subscribers worldwide. No breakdown was given for PVOD, but Disney + viewership numbers are much larger in North America.

For “Jungle Cruise”, Saturday was 9 percent below the opening day. For “Black Widow” – also on Disney + PVOD – the decline was 41 percent. Going back to the opening days before PVOD in summer 2019, Disney’s family-friendly “The Lion King” posted a 22 percent decline on Saturday.

“Old”

Last weekend there was the debut of two exclusive theater pieces with “Old” (Universal) and “Snake Eyes” (Paramount); this weekend they fell 60 percent and 70 percent respectively. “Black Widow” fell 68 percent on the second weekend. None of this names PVOD as the villain responsible for overthrowing the Marvel title.

PVOD has an impact, but this parallel game also gives cinemas better deals on film rentals.

Total gross this weekend will be around $ 77 million, a slight improvement over last weekend’s $ 71 million. Noteworthy here are the Olympic Games – or rather, how the Olympic Games were not included in this week’s results. Studios traditionally steer movies around two-week global influence, but Disney took the chance to see a drop in Olympic viewership. It is possible that this was a bigger factor overseas; in foreign territories (China and some other Asian countries not yet playing), Jungle Cruise totaled $ 27.6 million (with the same home game option in most locations, but not all). Covid issues, including major restrictions, also played a role.

The $ 77 million this weekend is 53 percent of the same date in 2019. On a rolling four-week basis, it’s 55 percent. That’s a slight improvement over last week’s 53 percent.

How old, the Green Knight and nine days fighting America's fears

The Green Knight

A24

Two broad releases from specialist distributors placed in the top 5. David Lowery’s “The Green Knight” (A24), a retelling of the medieval Sir Galwain legend, is currently in second place at nearly $ 6.8 million. Typical for many A24 wide-play films both had great reviews and poor audience response (C + Cinemascore). It tops “Old” with less than $ 100,000 for the grand through Saturday, but the Universal movie was up $ 600,000 yesterday and could still finish at # 2.

Still water“(Focus) with Matt Damon managed $ 5.1 million in expected range. The drama about an American father trying to acquit his daughter on the French murder charge was supported by coverage of its premiere in Cannes as well as the presence of its leading actor. But mixed reviews and a still challenged older audience dampened its opening.

Both “Knight” and “Stillwater” are expected on PVOD within three weeks, and their theatrical appearances should benefit both of them.

“Black Widow” held its own in fourth place with a 45 percent decline, making it the second-best place among the top 10 holdovers. It’s packed with “Knight” and “Old” right up front and will likely lead them next weekend, though the opening of “Suicide Squad” will create some competition. Domestic Black Widow is now $ 167 million, a high for the year.

Among the limited specialty openings, the best was “Nine Days” (Sony Pictures Classics), a 2020 Sundance premiere (it won the Screenplay Award) about unborn souls questioned about possible human existence. His $ 18,455 in four theaters is normal under the current circumstances.
