LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WKBT) – We are now only two days from the return of the WIAA State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse.

While thousands of athletes and thousands more fans are expected at the UWL, hotels may not be as crowded this year.

Explore La Crosse employees tell us that the WIAA does not sponsor overnight stays for the championship.

This year’s format enables the athletes to compete in the preliminary and final rounds on the same day.

The change makes it harder to know exactly how busy the community will be.

“We know that individuals and teams book alone. But it’s harder to follow, ”said Explore La Crosse, director of sports and events for Jeremiah Burish.

A search for room availability reveals that some rooms are still available, but options are limited.

Most of the properties we reviewed didn’t show any open rooms Thursday through Saturday.
