Let’s not forget this important part of our local economic development efforts.

The tourism industry, which includes meetings and conventions, event-bound visitors, tourists and travelers, is really gaining momentum in our region. As you may recall, we talked about the importance of the youth sports tournaments, which continued safely and successfully through most of the pandemic. Now I would like to mention a few other things for your radar.

Our first river boat of the year, the American Duchess, is scheduled to dock in downtown Cape Girardeau on Thursday, April 8th. We look forward to many more.

The USA Gymnastics Nationals Women’s Collegiate Championships will take place April 8-10 on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. The Muddy River Marathon, a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, takes place in Cape on May 1st. The Big BAM Missouri Cross State Bike Tour takes place on June 15th. And the Great Race, the world’s leading classic car rally, will bring more than 120 cars to our region on June 22nd.

But wait, there’s more. The Mini Chase Vintage Motorcycle Event will navigate the area from July 6-10, not forgetting the Shipyard Music Festival on September 17-18.

Further events are already booked for 2022, including a motorcycle sports tour and a Cabela King Cat fishing tournament.

Each of these events brings new income to the region and plays an important role in stimulating economic activity. I would like to express special thanks to our Visit Cape team for all of their efforts.
