– Less than an hour from the Triangle area, there is a tiny house community on the site of a historic mill village. Built on the banks of the Tar River, the Rocky Mount Mills have long been a center of culture and commerce.

Today, the historic campus has been renovated with breweries, trendy restaurants, grassy picnic areas, and a hotel with tiny houses that can be rented overnight.

There was a time when mills and mill villages lined the rivers of North Carolina. But after decades of floods, fires and wars, you rarely see a fully functioning mill community.

Much like the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, the Capitol Broadcasting Company revitalized the vacant Rocky Mount Mills with the aim of becoming a mixed-use destination for keep the mills alive and help inspire tourism to the Tar River and Rocky Mount.

“They bought the mill in 2007 and started operations in 2013. The first brewery opened in 2014,” said Evan Covington Chavez, Head of Development at Rocky Mount Mills.

To date, the picturesque campus has five restaurants, seven breweries, a bottle shop, an event location, 67 apartments, 120,000 feet of office space, 55 restored Mühlendorf houses – and a tiny home hotel with 20 tiny houses.

They also have a beer garden, a café, several fields with sports equipment – and a picturesque place with a view of the exact spot on the Tar River after which Rocky Mount takes its name.

The community of colorful tiny houses offers unique accommodation for visitors to the historic campus.

With tiny homes growing in popularity, a lot of people just want that Experience of staying in one – to see if they like it.

Though cozy, every tiny home feels surprisingly spacious. They offer sleeping arrangements for four people, including a bed in an attic upstairs and a couch that converts into a double bed on the ground floor.

There is an overhead flat-screen TV and a kitchen with a coffee maker, mini-fridge, and microwave. The bathroom is hidden behind a sliding door.

Outside, a circle of brightly colored chairs surrounds a fire pit, making the Tiny Home Hotel a truly social experience.

Some of the homes are pet friendly and almost all breweries and restaurants allow pets as well.

The Rocky Mount Mills campus has modern breweries and restaurants that are integrated into a historic mill village.

The nearby breweries, restaurants and the river are about a two-minute walk away.

In the early 2000s, the Rocky Mount Mills were on the verge of extinction. Thanks to the revitalization work, the thriving complex now offers a walkable nightlife and a unique mixed-use destination that is promoting tourism in Rocky Mount.
