To say it was a challenging year and a half is an understatement.

Now that the summer season has arrived, many people are planning much-needed travel excursions. While restrictions on mask use and social distancing are easing in many states, precautions still need to be taken when traveling.

“I really hope that everyone can find the peace and relaxation they need this summer. Everyone deserves a break, we just have to make sure we continue to be careful, ”said Dr. Parvathi Somasundaram, Bayhealth Occupational Health Director. “I urge everyone to check the latest CDC guidelines for the area in which they are traveling before traveling. Things can change quickly and the CDC is a great resource with the latest information. “

The CDC traveler resources provide separate guides for people vaccinated and unvaccinated against COVID-19. Fully vaccinated means two weeks after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or two weeks after a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. There are also separate policies for domestic and international travel.

While many states have since lifted their mask requirements, there are still times when those who have been vaccinated should consider wearing one. “If you use means of transport such as plane or bus, a mask is of course required. Make sure you follow all recommendations posted in these areas. And whenever you find yourself in a crowded environment, such as on the promenade or at an outdoor concert, everyone should consider wearing a mask, keeping social distance as much as possible and of course practicing careful hand hygiene ” said Somasundaram. “Immunocompromised people should consider wearing a mask even after vaccination if they are with people outside their household.”

For anyone planning to travel internationally, the CDC strongly recommends getting the COVID-19 vaccine in advance. There are also guidelines for COVID tests on return. “While not required, I would urge anyone who wants to board a plane to get tested for COVID-19. It is a simple measure that will ensure that you are not COVID positive before boarding a plane, ”she said.

Before you hit the streets or go to heaven this summer, there are other practical measures to consider. “Before you travel, whether you are abroad or just hours away, it is important to always have your health insurance card and enough medicine with you to cover your entire trip,” said Somasundaram.

Those who enjoy the great outdoors want to be well prepared. If you want to hike, bike or play sports, you should make sure that you have suitable footwear, safety equipment, plenty of water, sunscreen and bug spray.

“I am very excited to see people return to some of the things we have missed so much, such as travel,” said Somasundaram. “As long as individuals follow CDC and local guidelines and make good decisions in public, I have no doubt this summer will be both fun and safe.”
