From May 17, 2021 (Monday), Singapore and Malaysia will allow cross-border travel for compassionate and urgent reasons, the foreign ministers of both countries have announced.

In a joint statement following a face-to-face meeting in Singapore on Sunday (May 2, 2021), Malaysia’s Dato ‘Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, and Singapore’s Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan Both noted their agreement on the procedures and entry requirements for death and critically ill emergencies between Singapore and Malaysia – an agreement providing a framework to facilitate travel between the two countries on compassionate and urgent reasons.

Details of the procedures and entry requirements are published by the Department of Immigration of Malaysia and the Immigration and Control Authority of Singapore.

Speaking on a doorstop after the meeting about the agreement, Minister Balakrishnan said, “This is a plan that is required because of the close family ties between Malaysia and Singapore – parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. When family crises arise people want to get together.”

“Given this special and close relationship between the people of Singapore and the people of Malaysia, it is therefore necessary to have such arrangements. We will provide more details on the types of testing and quarantine arrangements that will be required to operationalize this scheme . “

Minister Hishammuddin also announced: (The) reciprocal green lane and the regular shuttle agreement were also discussed. The air travel bubble requires further negotiations between the transport ministries on both sides. Mutual recognition of vaccination certificates, digital recognition, is ongoing. MySejahtera and TraceTogether must be compatible. ”

Both ministers also welcomed “the agreement between the Singapore Intelligent Nations and Digital Government Office and the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation on the mutual technical review of health certificates issued in Singapore and Malaysia”.

The statement added: “The two ministers agreed that Singapore and Malaysia will continue to make progress on their respective national vaccination programs for vaccinating long-term residents, including Malaysians residing in Singapore and Singaporeans residing in Malaysia.

“The two ministers agreed to continue discussions on further measures to reopen the borders, based on the COVID-19 situation in both countries and on the health and safety of both peoples.”

Finally, Minister Hishammuddin and Minister Balakrishnan welcomed the resumption of personal official exchanges between the two sides after Minister Balakrishnan’s visit to Kuala Lumpur in March 2021 and Minister Hishammuddin’s visit to Singapore in May 2021. They also agreed on the importance of convening the 10th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat in Singapore later this year once the pandemic situation improves.
