A man and woman are dead after an alleged murder-suicide in a hotel lobby in downtown Houston.

Houston police said the shooting occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Marriott Marquis.

Witness the shooting said KPRC-TV in Houston they heard two shots.

Malina Jara and Peter Maher visited Houston from Virginia. The couple were looking for souvenirs when they told KPRC that a hotel clerk walked into the gift shop and locked the door behind her. She said the clerk said there was an active shooter and they had to go into hiding.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said a man in their late 30s and a woman in their late 20s arrived at the hotel separately but were carrying suitcases.

Finner said the man and woman spoke to each other before drawing a gun and fatally shooting them. Then he killed himself, said Finner.

The identity of man and woman and the specific nature of their relationship have not yet been confirmed.

“Let me tell you something like that, I don’t know if you can stop it,” said Finner. “It’s really sad. It’s a state that a lot of people get into and I don’t know what causes it. If it’s a domestic relationship, we want to pray for them.”

No other injuries were reported.
