(WXYZ) – Traveling abroad may have additional costs depending on where you are going. Some countries now require you to take out travel health insurance.

The same requirement applies to cruise lines. Royal Caribbean International requires unvaccinated passengers to purchase travel insurance on Florida cruises. Enough to cover medical expenses related to COVID-19, including quarantine and evacuation.

What are the typical costs and could they spill over to domestic travel? A travel agent we spoke to said the pandemic had kept industry players on their toes as the rules keep changing.

“Well, how it looks in many places, in Aruba, I’m going to Costa Rica in a few days, you have to have travel health insurance that covers you in case you get COVID there,” Theresa Winters, the owner of Faraway Places Travel, said.

Winters said the cost of insurance is only about $ 30 to $ 60 per traveler, a small price to pay for rest.

“The cost of getting stuck anywhere is substantial. They’ll be taking you to a remote part of the resort for two weeks,” Winters said. “So you have to know that someone will take care of it. Do you need to be transferred to a hospital?

What About Travel Insurance For People In The United States? Dominic Pallone, executive director of the Michigan Association of Health Plans, said the most often that your health insurance covers emergency situations. He says that you should do your due diligence when traveling abroad.

“In today’s world with COVID, many overseas governments have begun to require very specific levels of health insurance for travelers to their countries,” Pallone said.

Before traveling abroad, experts recommend calling your health insurance company to find out about your insurance coverage and see if it is available abroad. Also, check with the U.S. Department of State for the location you are going to and what is required.
