MARINETTE — The annual meeting of the Marinette and Menominee Legion baseball teams is July 4th, as is American flags and crickets. Thanks to the great pitches of both teams, however, there was no offensive fireworks display between the Rote Welle and the Post 39 on Sunday at Pedersen Ball Park.

Menominee’s Ethan Russell and Marinette’s Seth Seefeldt each allowed four hits on the hill, but in the end it was a mistake and Jaden Werner’s clever base run that allowed Post 39 to beat his metropolitan rival 2-0 achieve.

With a 1-0 lead from Marinette at the end of the fifth inning, Werner pushed a one-out single into right field before advancing from Preston Rehwinkel to third base.

The next batter for Post 39, Kougar Wagner, went to second base but hit the ball with just enough momentum to allow Werner to take off from third place and cross home plate in a cloud of dirt, taking only the day Chad Kenney dodged to give Marinette a 2-0 lead.

“It’s always a fun game on July 4th and I’m proud of the way we play. We went blow by blow with a good mug and nothing can be taken away from it. They are a very talented team, ”said Red Wave coach John Lauzer. “We haven’t had a full team all season and this is the first time that I have the kids in the right positions. I feel like we can play against anyone now. “

Menominee made three mistakes that afternoon, the costly one in the third inning.

Braedon McMahon hit a one-out single to get Kaiden Goltz on as a courtesy runner. Russell gave Werner a walk to get Goltz into goal position and get Rehwinkel onto the plate, where he went to the shortstop to begin the double play.

While the Rote Welle could eliminate Werner at the choice of the field player, the throw sailed to the first base past James Coldren’s glove and into foul territory, which allowed Goltz to stroll over home plate and post 39 and an early one- To give run advantage.

Seefeldt took the win after hitting seven thugs, including hitting the side in the sixth inning before pulling Connor Schroeder back with a swinging K to end the game.

“It starts on the hill with Seth. He threw punches and was very efficient. On the defensive we had some great games on the outfield with AR (Aaron Rupert) and Kougar and of course you have to play those games in a close game and we did that, ”said Marinette coach Brian Lesandrini. “Seth has his game today. He got into the rhythm and worked fast, and then a defense works best when a thrower works fast and throws sticks. “

For the Red Wave, Russell was charged with loss after hitting three and leaving three. He also went one to three at the court.

Menominee’s was able to bring a runner into the points in the first round after Seefeldt plucked Andrew Schroeder, who moved up to second place thanks to a sacrifice by Russell. The red wave could not push Schroeder over, however, as Zach Starzynski was eliminated at first base against Keaton Uecke before Coldren tried to end the inning.

The Rote Welle threatened again in the top of the third with two outs after Andrew Schroeder put a floor ball single on the left field and advanced on a wild pitch to the third. Starzynski had a chance to break Marinette’s lead, but he drilled Seefeldt’s fastball straight back to the pitcher, who made the catch to get post 39 out of the inning.

Menominee had another chance to score in fifth goal after Connor Schroeder led the inning with a single in right field before taking second base from a sack from Ashton Barstow, but Dawson Allgeyer burst while Andrew Schroeder was in left field flew to end the game inning.

Connor Schroeder went one to three while Andrew Schroeder and Barstow both hit one to two on the bowl.

Werner ended the day with one hit and two walks along with a stolen base. Rehwinkel went one-on-two with an RBI and a stolen base, while McMahon and Carson Erdman took a base hit each.

“We still have a lot to do on the offensive, but we didn’t get many chances today and we used the few,” said Lesandrini. “Jaden made a good read on goal at home when Menominee’s first baseman turned our backs and we took advantage of the mistake and in a close game it depends.”

Marinette played a double header against De Pere on Monday, the results not being available at the time of going to press. Next up for Post 39 is a trip to Green Bay Southwest, at 8 p.m. today

The Red Wave are back in action today at home against Iron Mountain, with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
