Marriott has named Ty Breland as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer effective late October 2021.

A 17 year old Marriott veteran, Ty held a variety of senior positions with the company that included corporate and continental responsibilities. Since 2016 he has been the Global HR Officer for Talent Development & Organizational Capability with Executive Oversight for Talent Management, including Leadership Development, Organizational Capability and Change Management.

Ty also oversees the Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center, including its business strategy and sales efforts, and serves as the senior human resources leader for the company’s Global Development, Design & Operations Services.

“Hospitality is all about people, and Ty has the expertise, background, and passion to further strengthen Marriott’s People First culture as we grow our presence around the world,” said Capuano. “He is valued across the company for his visionary leadership, problem-solving skills, and humility. Ty and I consider human resources to be critical to creating business value and I know he will bring an innovative approach to Marriott’s HR practice around the world. I know Ty and have been working closely with him for a number of years and I am delighted to welcome him to my management team. “

Ty joined Marriott in 2004 as a member of the company’s Talent Management and Analytics Group and held various senior human resources positions over the next 11 years.

He served as the company’s Global HR Integration Officer and was responsible for human resource integration in the merger of Marriott with Starwood Hotels and Resorts. As part of this effort, Ty developed and launched the company’s digital learning platform, which is instrumental in delivering learning experiences that enable professional and personal development for the company’s worldwide workforce.

From 2011 to 2015 he was Regional Vice President of Human Resources for the Eastern United States. Previously, he was responsible for HR support for several global disciplines, including sales, marketing and revenue management.

Ty helped launch Marriott’s Emerging Leaders Program, a unique initiative aimed at accelerating diversity and inclusion efforts among executives and general managers. He was also responsible for initiating the company’s Workforce Innovation efforts, which provided a blueprint for redesigning the frontline roles in the company’s global real estate portfolio.

Prior to joining Marriott, Ty worked as a research consultant for the Human Resources Research Organization. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Ph.D. in Industrial / Organizational Psychology from Virginia Tech, where he is a board member of Virginia Tech Hospitality Business School.

Ty will succeed David Rodriguez, who will step down in late October and retire in late 2021 after an outstanding 23-year career with the company.
