MAYFIELD, KY – Life in the Local 6 region has changed forever in our region. Homes, shops and landmarks need to be rebuilt after a tornado devastated Mayfield. Several homeowners whose homes have been damaged or destroyed have to spend money to stay in a hotel simply because they have nowhere else to go.

For some, reconstruction is already under way. For others, picking up the pieces is just the beginning. Mahala Perez and members of her church cleaned up their home on Walnut Street Monday afternoon.

“I had no idea if any of my family were doing well,” said Perez.

She and her family now reside in a hotel in Metropolis, Illinois.

“Now we have been displaced by this tornado and of course we are homeless,” said Perez. “Like so many people.”

Just down the street, Aaron Williams was working on raising American flags.

“It’s all about America here. We need each other right now. The only thing I’ll always do is be there to help, “said Williams.

While there for his community, he worries that others may consider this a time to leave.

“I’m afraid it will bring a lot of people out of town. I’m afraid the population will go down, ”said Williams. “Now everyone will get this insurance money and move because it will be easier. Lots of people probably won’t want to rebuild here, but I hope they stay tuned. “

Even in this dark time, Perez holds his head up.

“We will survive,” said Perez. “We have people to help us and I’m sure we can do it.”

Although many people, like Perez, have lost their homes, after speaking with them we know that they will always consider Mayfield their home.
