LANSING, Michigan (WLUC) – To help curb the spread of COVID-19, the Michigan Department of Health (MDHHS), in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and select Michigan airports, are piloting a travel point testing program this spring which is used to perform antigen COVID-19 testing in high volume travel locations.

Quick and free tests are offered at several Michigan Welcome Centers and airports across the state. The results are available in just 15 minutes.

Walk-ups are used according to space requirements, and there is also the option of registering online using a mobile device.

“As we kick off the summer with vaccines and a light at the end of the tunnel, I am so proud of this partnership between MDOT and MDHHS to keep Michigan safe,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “I encourage all Michigandans to continue masking, social distancing, and washing hands to slow the spread. When you re-enter the state or travel across the state, get tested at one of the new locations that will be set up at key points. Finally, I encourage you to get vaccinated. This is the most effective way to keep you and your family safe and put this pandemic behind us. “

“We are pleased to provide space for immediate COVID-19 testing in our select Welcome Centers,” said Paul C. Ajegba, Head of State Transportation. “Our Welcome Centers are a gateway to the thousands of travelers who come to the state every day. Therefore, they are ideal locations to prevent this terrible virus from spreading. Just look for the COVID test signs in front of the appropriate centers along the highways. “

Insurance is not required. The results can be uploaded via text, email or to the traveler’s patient portal.

“We are excited to partner with MDOT to provide simple, rapid COVID-19 testing for Michigander and travelers to Michigan,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS Chief Medical Executive and Chief Deputy for Health. “With concerns about new, more contagious variants growing, testing for COVID-19 is more important than ever. If you are traveling, we encourage you to take advantage of these tests when re-entering or traveling across the state. “

Test trailers will be set up on the Michigan Welcome Center site. Test stations will be located in multiple locations within Michigan airports.
