MDOT provides free resources to help residents prepare for hurricanes

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has several free resources to help Mississippi residents prepare for a hurricane to ensure everyone is ready before a tropical system looms.

To help residents create evacuation plans, MDOT is providing free resources including the MDOT Traffic mobile app, a hurricane evacuation kit checklist, and MDOT Hurricane Evacuation Guide 2021 in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

The MDOT Hurricane Evacuation Guide provides information to help develop a preparedness plan such as evacuation routes, countercurrent information, radio coverage areas by the Mississippi public broadcasting company, and vital contact information for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the American Red Cross, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, and the adjacent state DOTs and highway patrols. Important information about animal shelters, animal care, accommodation, and travel resources is included.

The Hurricane Evacuation Checklist provides a list of recommended items that should be included in evacuation kits, including flashlights, a first aid kit, durable food for 14 days, and more.

Residents are encouraged to download the MDOT Traffic mobile app, which provides real-time traffic conditions across the state and is used to post emergency alerts directly to users.
